A Gym Membership That Charges You for Not... →
“[P]eople are more motivated by immediate consequences than by future possibilities.” He’s referring to the financial aspect, but the same could be said about the hard-earned payoff that comes with regular exercise over a long period of time. It’s difficult to visualize and thus strive for that payoff until you wake up one morning and actually see the change in your body.

Roger Ebert: Why 3D doesn't work and never will. →
Awesome post from Ebert, citing a letter from a widely respected and experienced film editor, Walter Murch. Money quote from Murch: This is a deep problem, which no amount of technical tweaking can fix. Nothing will fix it short of producing true “holographic” images.

ericmortensen: Beastie Boys - Body Movin’  Are Beastie Boys music videos good enough to warrant a two disc Criterion Collection set? Absofuckinglutely.  It’s a great set, with multiple angles and multiple audio tracks containing remixes and acapela versions. ah yes, I do believe I detect the not-so-subtle hand of Fatboy Slim in this excellent remix.

Roku Lands Its First Cable Channel →
“It’s the first domino to fall,” said Ed Lee, director of business development and content partnerships at Roku, who said other conversations were being held with other channels who he declined to specify. Indeed. But this is even more fascinating: The loophole that WealthTV is slipping through is that it doesn’t have affiliate deals with either of the two biggest operators, Comcast and Time...

Two spaces after a period: Why you should never,... →
It’s funny how this topic gets people so incensed, isn’t it? Anyway, yeah, those people that do the two space thing are certified morons. ;-)

In addition to supporting H.264, Chrome currently bundles an embedded version of Adobe’s closed source and proprietary Flash Player plugin. If H.264 support is being removed to “enable open innovation”, will Flash Player support be dropped as well? If not, why? Android currently supports… This is exactly what I’ve been mulling over for the last hour.

HTML5 video suffers a huge setback in the name of... →
I don’t care how you try to clothe it, this prevents HTML5 video support from moving forward and increases the murky fog surrounding the standard. Many will classify this as “anti-Apple” or “pro-Adobe Flash” but all that sentiment is entirely irrelevant. HTML5 video is not about Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, or Google. It’s about those that create web video and...

thedailywhat: In Case You Missed It of the Day: Jon Stewart offers his thoughts on the tragic shooting in Tucson. [tds.] See Also: Stephen Colbert’s reaction. I loved this. Especially this: “There is light in this situation. I urge everyone: read up. About those who were hurt, and or killed in this shooting. You will be comforted by just how much anonymous goodness there really is in...

On Seeing a Sex Surrogate →
In 1985, I began talking with Sondra, my therapist, about the possibility of seeing a sex surrogate. When Sondra had originally mentioned the idea — explaining that a sexual therapist worked with a client’s emotional problems concerning sex, while a surrogate worked with a client’s body — I had been too afraid to discuss it. I rationalized that someone who was not an attendant, nurse, or doctor...
